  • Hiring Reserve Officers:
    • The Lowell Police Department is currently accepting applications for Reserve Police Officers. All applicants must meet the following requirements:
      1. Must be at least 21 years of age
      2. Must be a citizen of the Unites States
      3. May have no felony convictions
      4. Must be of good moral character
      5. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
      6. Must be able to pass a physical fitness evaluation, written test and extensive background investigation.

Portage Police Department

Emergency Hiring:

  • The City of Portage Police Merit Board, at their January 17th, 2012 public hearing, voted to invoke the Emergency Hiring procedures outlined in the Section 8 “Hiring, Ranking, Promotion, Vacations, and Awards” and the Policy to Section 8 “Personal Qualifications and Procedure”.
  • Application packets for the position of Probationary Patrol Officer with experience for the Portage Police Department will be available from February 6th starting at 8:00 AM through February 19th at 8:00 AM.  All applications must be completed and returned to the Portage Police Department no later than 8:00 am on March 3rd 2012. 
  • Those interested in applying may pick up an application packet at the Portage Police Department, 2693 Irving St.  All applicants must meet the following requirements:
    • Must be State Certified from a state accredited police academy; and
    • Must have at least one (1) year experience as a full time certified Law Enforcement Officer.
  • The salary for a probationary officer is $33,182.76, however, officers with 3 or more years of municipal law enforcement experience may qualify for a starting salary of $39,391.04.  Then after one year of satisfactory service the salary increases to $42,305.90.  After two years of service the salary increases to $45,509.18.

  • Indiana University Northwest is conducting a search for a Chief of Police to be responsible for a department of fifteen officers.
  • This senior management position is responsible for the executive and expert leadership over public safety functions campus-wide.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to actively facilitate and engage in communications and collaboration among various campus, university, local and state entities.
  • Must be committed to providing superior citizen service and to moving the Police Department forward in the areas of community relations, technological advances, and proactive policing.
  • The successful candidate must have 10 years law enforcement experience, including at least 6 years management experience at mid-management or executive level.
  • Experience in a college or university setting is desired.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, public or business administration, or a related field, is required; advanced degree preferred. Certification from at least one advanced law enforcement management training school such as the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, Northwestern Staff and Command, or similar institution is preferred.
  • Must be able to attain or have an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certification. ILETB Certified Instructor training preferred.
  • Must pass a medical, psychological, and background investigation.
