26-011 Field Training Officer Refresher

The course: Provides continuing education for officers who have completed a basic Field Training Officer course and are currently serving as FTOs. The course reinforces core responsibilities, introduces updated training and evaluation strategies, and keeps officers current with legal requirements, departmental standards, and best practices in mentoring probationary officers.

Who Should Attend? This course is designed for veteran Field Training Officers who want to strengthen their foundational knowledge. It is also valuable for FTO Program and Training Coordinators as well as Supervisors and Administrators seeking to strengthen, expand, or establish a field training program.

Topics
Identify current trends and challenges FTOs are encountering with probationary officers. Recognize legal considerations in managing officers in training. Review and apply Standard Evaluation Guidelines (SEGs) and scoring consistently and effectively. Address trainees who are not responding to training, including developing and implementing improvement plans. Utilize updated training techniques to maximize recruit success. Incorporate fundamentals of reality-based training into the FTO program

Instructor: Michael DeHart- has served as the Field Training Unit Coordinator for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). He started his law enforcement career in 1989 and now serves as a lieutenant with IMPD. He’s an Indiana Law Enforcement Board (ILETB) Master Instructor and a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Michael has Master degrees in Criminal Justice as well and Business Management. He previously served as an adjunct Criminal Justice lecturer for Indiana Wesleyan University, in the Department of Social Sciences.
