Course Description

In establishing an effective community-wide response to address domestic violence, law enforcement must join with social service, victim advocate, and child welfare agencies that interact with domestic violence victims. With the collaboration of law enforcement officers, judges, prosecutors, probation officers, medical professionals, magistrates, victim’s advocates and victims themselves, the culture of domestic violence can be interrupted thru intervention and eventually stopped.

This full day Domestic Violence Workshop is designed to provide training to law enforcement officers to review current law, review domestic violence dynamics, including causal factors and the alcohol and drug abuse component, and for law enforcement to receive instruction on appropriate responses for real and potential domestic violence situations.

Goals of the training include:

Training officers to assist victims beyond the arrest of offenders, providing oral and written information and support, referring victims to shelters; assisting in safety planning; assisting victims in placing calls to a local domestic violence service provider; examining existing attitudes and procedural habits of officers; reviewing the linkage of child abuse and neglect and domestic violence; providing officers with tools to assess victims and for identifying potential high risk domestic violence victims and provide assistance and safety planning.
