Course Description

REGISTRATION WILL OPEN MONDAY, APRIL 1, 2024  @ 9:00 AM.

Pre-requisite: Must have successfully passed the entry Physical Assessment on 07/22/24 at NILEA. Basic Recruit training will commence on July 29, 2024.
Recruits must report no later than 0800 with a bagged lunch. The basic recruit course for officers consists of over 640 hours of training in areas of criminal and traffic law, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, physical tactics, EMS awareness, crash investigations, water safety, domestic violence, sexual assault, drugs and narcotics, crime prevention, standardized field sobriety testing, etc. The course is designed to incorporate classroom and practical exercises of situations that officers may encounter when they return to their departments. Officers attending the 24-52 academy class MUST be registered BY THEIR DEPARTMENT on this website by clicking the "register officers for this class" button above. REGISTRATION WILL OPEN MONDAY, APRIL 1, 2024 @ 9:00 AM.

Reporting instructions

 Required Uniform items to be worn when reporting on the first day of the Basic Session:

 1 Pair of 5.11 TacLite Pro khaki pants

 1 Polo with embroidery 

 1 Navy Blue T-shirt (worn under a Polo shirt)

 1 Pair  5.11 ATAC 6” or 8” black book and plain black socks

 1 Plain black leather belt (specified)


NILEA Uniform Items Required:
Per Academy specifications, and to ensure color and quality standards, all academy uniform clothing must be purchased at Star Uniform, 6075 U.S. Highway 20, Portage, IN 46368  and all academy PT uniform clothing must be purchased at Blythe’s Sport Shop, 2810 Calumet Ave, Valparaiso, IN 46383. Each Recruit is to obtain the following specified items from Star Uniform and Blythe’s Sport Shop before reporting to the first day of classes for the session. All uniform items are to be brought to the second day of the session.

Recruits may purchase additional items of the above as desired. 

Weapons: NO WEAPONS OF ANY TYPE shall be brought onto the NILEA Campus, including firearms, knives, etc., until instructed by NILEA staff. 

Dress Code: The Academy Dress Code requires Basic Recruits to wear Academy uniforms to all activities.  
 
Grooming Standards: Basic Recruits shall report to the Academy clean-shaven and with a conservative haircut.  Male recruits’ sideburns may not extend below the middle of the ear;  beards and mustaches are prohibited.  Female recruits’ hair must be conservative, pinned up during the training day, and worn off the neck, and the ears.  No artificial hair (e.g., extensions, toupees, weaves, wigs, etc.) is allowed.  No jewelry may be worn, except for a wedding ring and /or a conservative wristwatch worn securely.  

Conduct Standards: Regulations of the Academy are strictly enforced.  No alcohol or tobacco shall be brought to or used by any Recruit on the training site. No drugs or controlled substances, unless prescribed by a physician, or over-the-counter medication are allowed at the Academy. Cell phones must be left in the car. Inappropriate conduct will not be tolerated. Any violation of Academy standards is grounds for dismissal from the Academy.
