Course Description

This 8 hour course is for any First Responder who wants to have the extra occupational skill of communicating with a Spanish speaking individual. The words and phrases taught will be simple enough to effectively communicate until an interpreter can be reached. This class will help give clearer instructions, allow for less conflicts and provide better emergency services and protection. Cultural competence will be addressed and students will participate in scenarios based on each occupation.

 

SPACE IS LIMITED TO 15 PER CLASS TO ALLOW FOR EXTRA HELP AND SCENARIOS

 

The course is divided into four groups and dates. A short description of what will be included in each class is listed.

February  8th  - Basic Emergency Spanish for POLICE

Traffic stop; emergency situation; and on-scene phrases, drug names, common slang and Miranda rights.

February 10th - Basic Emergency Spanish for FIREFIGHTERS

On-scene; emergency situation phrases, medical concerns and topics

February 15th - Basic Emergency Spanish for EMS

On-scene; emergency situation phrases, patient evaluation and medical concern, drug names

February 17th - Basic Emergency Spanish for DISPATCHERS

On phone particularly the who, what and where; descriptions, medical and emergency phrases and words

 

 

Cost per student is $75. Students will receive training credits from the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (NILEA)
