Course Description

This is a three-day class, beginning Monday, October 18 thru Wednesday, October 20, 2021.

The police department Field Training Officer is one of the most important training positions an agency maintains. A well trained FTO, in conjunction with a well run FTO program, will help provide on the job real life "field training" to the probationary officer recently graduated from basic academy certification.

The successful FTO is the trainee's direct supervisor, trainer, and evaluator. The FTO is often selected because of his ethical performance of duty, his knowledge and application of current law, department policy, rules, regulations and best practices, and passes this knowledge on to the rookie officer. The highly trained FTO can protect an agency from civil suits originating from within and without the agency.

This course will cover all aspects of the field training program to include, recruit officer orientation, communication, motivation, principles of adult learning, proper documentation of a field trainee's performance, evaluation, remediation, and termination.
